Important Relations:

  • Mother’s or Father’s son is called Brother.

  • Mother’s or Father’s daughter is called Sister.

  • Mother’s or Father’s father. called Grand Father.

  • Mother’s or Father’s mother is called Grand Mother.

  • Mother’s or Father’s brother is called Uncle.

  • Mother’s or Father’s sister is called Aunt.

  • Son’s wife is called Daughter-in-law.

  • Daughter’s husband is called Son-in-law.

  • Brother’s wife is called Sister-in-law.

  • Sister’s husband or Hushand’s or wife’s brother is called Brother-in-law.

  • Brother’s sons is called Nephew.Daughter is called Niece.

Now after reading these blood relations , try to understand through some examples

Example 1: Sarita introduced a boy as the son of the daughter of the father of her uncle. The boy is Sarita’s

(a)Brother (b) Son (c) Uncle (d)Son-in-law (e)Nephew

Solution: Let’s go start from the end and keep on simplifying :

Daughter of uncle’s father means uncle’s sister.

Uncle’s sister means mother and son of the mother means her brother.

So the boy is Sarita’s brother. The answer is (a).

Example 2: A+B means A is the brother of’ B; A-B means A is the mother of B and A*B means A is the sister of B. Which of the folloowing means A is the maternal uncle of B,

(a) (A+C-B)

(b) (A-B+C)

(c) (A+C*B)

(d)None of these

Solution : Note that C has a relation between A and B. option (a) A+C-B implies that A is the brother of C who is the brother of B who brother of B. So (a) do.. not &ye what is asked. Option (b) also does not saywhat is required. Option(c) Ai-C-13 means A is the brother of C who is the mother of B means that A is the maternal uncle of B. Hence answer is (A+C*B).

Example 3: Pointing to a photograph of a boy Ravi said,he is the son of the only son of my mother. How is Ravi related to that boy.

(a) Brother

(b) Uncle

(c) Cousin

(d) Father

Solution : Boy in the photograph is the only son of the son of Ravi’s mother i.e., the son of Ravi. Hence, Ravi is the f other of boy. So option is (d).

Example 4: If A is the brother of B; B is the sister of C; and C is the father of D , how D is related to A?

(a) Brother

(b) Sister

(c) Nephew

(d) Cannot be determined


If D is Male, the answer is Nephew. If D is Female, the answer is Niece. As the sex of D is not known, hence, the relation between D and A cannot he determined.

Note: Niece – A daughter of one’s brother or sister, or of one’s brother-in-law or sister-in-law. Nephew -A son of one’s brother or sister, or of one’s brother-in-law or sister-in-law. So option is (d)

Points to remember:

  • The only son of your father- Yourself

  • Wife of the father-Nlother

  • The only son of grand father or grand mother -father

  • The only daughter-in-law of grand mother-mother

  • Mother-in-law of mother-Grand mother h.

  • Father-in-law of mother-Grandfather

  • The only daughter of the f other -sister

  • Son of the f other of the sister-Brother

  • Only son of the father-son

  • Only son of grand father – father
