Statistics is a branch of science that deals with the collection, analysis, interpretation and presentation of numerical data. Statisticians collect, verify and interpret data to solve problems in a wide variety of fields. A student pursuing statistics learns probability theory, statistical methodology, stochastic processes, statistical inference, operational research, bio-statistics, etc. The services of a statistician are required in every field right from government offices to international sporting events. Almost in every country there are statistical agencies or bureaus.


A qualified statistician get job opportunities in public sector organisations, financial institutions,major corporate conglomerates,private companies, etc. Students gets jobs in Indian Statistical Services, Indian Economic Services and Civil Services exams. colleges and Universities, etc. There are many job opportunities available such as econometrician, biostatistician, research analyst, biometrician, epidemiologist etc. Statisticians are often work for automobile, pharmaceutical and computer software companies in trial testing and product evaluation. Statisticians are also involved with the manufacturing, asset, liability, risk management, and marketing departments of firms. Most government organizations and agencies hire statisticians to evaluate population, demographic and economic measurements. Many other environmental, scientific and agricultural agencies hire statisticians for similar type of work in their respective fields. Even national defence organizations hire statisticians to assess weapons and strategy effectiveness.The reputed organizations viz. Planning Commission, the National Council of Applied Economic Research (NCAER), Institute of Applied Manpower Research (IAMR), Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), statistical and economic bureaus, institutions associated with socio-economic research, banks and public-sector undertakings employ statisticians.


It depends on the educational qualification and experience. Fresher’s get starting in the range of Rs.20,000 – 30,000 per month. Those are in senior positions such as like Statistical Analyst, Statistician / Econometrician, etc. get paid in the range of Rs. 80,000 – 1, 20,000 per month. Those are employed by colleges and Universities also receive respectable salary.


The minimum educational qualification required in this field is a bachelor’s degree with a major in statistics or mathematics. A Master’s degree or Ph.D. is required for higher-level positions. A combination of statistical skills with other subject viz. economics, operational research, computer science, business administration, etc. give a competitive advantage in the job market. Job opportunities in industrial research require a master’s degree and several years of experience. A high level of specialised training is necessary in order to be well placed in industry. Teaching and research field are open to candidates with a master’s degree and doctorate.
