Computer Network: PAN,LAN,WAN,MAN,CAN,EPN,VPN,HAN,SAN
A computer network contains two or more computers that are connected to share data or resources, exchange information or files like CDs and printers. It may be linked by cables, satellites, radio waves, telephone lines or infrared light beams.
Types of network –
Personal Area Network (PAN)
PAN is used to connect different types of devices such as a computer, phone, PAD, and tablets. This computer network is used for a small range of 10 meters and within that range data, files and information can be transferred.
Local Area Network (LAN)
LAN is a computer network that is used within a limited range or geographical areas such as a building, office or room.
For example, there are 5 computers in an office, one computer is for a secretary and a printer is attached to that computer and in this network, the printer can be used by different computers. Different technologies that are used in LAN –
- Bus technology – In this technology, all the connections are made between the computers through a single wire and also called the bus.
- Ring technology – In this technology all the computers are connected in a circle or ring form such as a computer is connected to each other from both the sides.
- Star technology – This technology is same as ring technology but in star technology, a device which is called switch is placed in the center and every computer is connected to that switch. A data or information which is sent from one computer to other first went to the switch then it finally goes to the computer.
Wide Area Network (WAN)
WAN is used to connect different LAN (Local Area Network). LAN are connected to different LANs through the router. For example, Internet in which HTTP, FTP protocols are used to transfer data or files.
Metropolitan Area Network (MAN)
MAN is a wide network than local area network but smaller than wide area network. Metropolitan area network is used within a city or within a college or used in banks in a city and this network is also used in the military for communication.
Campus Area Network (CAN)
As the name suggested, this type of computer network is used in universities, schools, government, small business or district etc. In this network, there is connection between different local area networks within a small range or limited range.
Enterprise Private Network (EPN)
In enterprise private network, the single organization used this network to connect different offices like production sites, remote office, shops and head office to share resources.
Virtual Private Network (VPN)
VPN is a network which provides safe and secure connection over a less secure network like the internet. VPN is used by brand offices and remote users to securely access their resources or files.
Storage Area Network (SAN)
SAN is a high-speed specialized network that gives block level data storage and it moves storage files or resources away from the network and secure them or place them in an own high-performance network.
Home Area Network (HAN)
HAN is a network which is used in residential local area network for communication between the device used in the home like personal computers, mobile computing devices, and printers.
